WASHINGTON – During the markup of a Congressional resolution recognizing National Police Week, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, remembered the heroism of Memphis Police Officer Geoffrey Redd, killed in the line of duty in February. He also commended the bravery of the police officers who confronted a shooter at the Covenant School in Nashville in March.

In his remarks, Congressman Cohen said in part:

“In Memphis, we had an officer named Geoffrey Redd, and Officer Redd was killed in the line of duty…He was on duty and some man from Indiana who wandered into Tennessee for some reason and caused some havoc at one of the public libraries. Officer Redd and another officer went in and the guy just turned and shot him in the head at point-blank range. We mourned his death. He was a fine man and a pretty young officer and died in the line of duty, as so many officers do…

“I also want to remember…the outstanding officers who acted at the school in Nashville when three students and three adults were killed. In the shooting there, they went in and put their lives in harm’s way and they killed the assailant. They were heroic and did their jobs.”
