WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) commemorated Tom Lee Day on May 8, recalling the courage and heroism of Mr. Lee, who rescued 32 people from the capsized M.E. Norman on this day in 1925.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“Tom Lee was an American hero. Although he couldn’t swim, he saved the lives of 32 people floundering in the Mississippi River off Memphis as their ship sank, and has ever after been recognized for his bravery. I’m pleased to see the renovations at the riverside park named in his honor – renewing a fitting tribute to the man.”
