On November 14, 2024, U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn addressed the Senate floor regarding the need for federal disaster relief for Hurricane Helene survivors in Upper East Tennessee. The hurricane caused significant damage to over 1,500 homes and impacted 209 businesses in the area.
Senator Blackburn has visited the affected region five times recently to assess the damage and speak with those affected. She emphasized the importance of passing disaster assistance before the new Congress is sworn in. "With last week’s election results, the American people have given Republicans an incredible mandate," she stated, highlighting priorities such as securing borders and strengthening the economy alongside providing necessary aid to hurricane survivors.
The destruction from Hurricane Helene is substantial, with $510 million required for infrastructure repairs in Tennessee alone. According to assessments by the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, 503 homes were destroyed, and economic losses could exceed $1.3 billion for agricultural and forestry industries as per the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture.
Despite local efforts to rebuild, federal support remains crucial. Blackburn noted that federal programs like those offered by FEMA and the Small Business Administration are struggling due to funding shortages. "This shortfall is inexcusable," she remarked.
Senator Blackburn urged Congress to pass disaster assistance promptly, stating that it would provide essential resources for recovery efforts across Tennessee and other affected states. "By passing federal disaster relief, we can ensure that Tennesseans and Americans across the Southeast have the resources they need to make their communities stronger than ever."
