Christian Brothers University No.10 Montevallo Wins Pair of Close Contests Over Bucs

The Christian Brothers University baseball team dropped a pair of hard-fought decisions to No. 10 Montevallo, on Sunday afternoon, at Nadicksbernd Field. The Falcons took the opener 8-5 and held off on for an 8-6 win in the nightcap. 

GAME ONE: UM 8 (11-1, 2-0 GSC) CBU 5 (6-8, 1-4 GSC)


GAME CHANGER:

Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the eighth the Bucs scored three runs, but the Falcons answered with four in the top of the ninth. 


INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • The Bucs were outhit 13-8.
  • Jarret Fowlkes (2-for-4) was the lone CBU player with multiple hits. 
  • Nick Stamper was 1-4 with a three-RBI double.
  • CBU took advantage of four hit by pitch. 
  • JJ Pease, who is fresh off a Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Week performance, struck out 11 CBU hitters in seven innings. 
KEY PLAYS:

After the Falcons plated a run in the top of the first, the game was scoreless until they added two more in the fifth. 

Trailing 4-0 in the eighth, Nick Stamper got the Bucs to within 4-3 with a bases-clearing double. 

Montevallo answered with four runs in the top of the ninth to take an 8-3 lead. 

CBU battled back, scoring a pair in the ninth, but left the tying run at the plate to end the game. 

Fowlkes had an RBI double in the frame and Clay Facteau had a sacrifice fly to finish the scoring.  


GAME TWO: UM 8 (12-1, 3-0 GSC) CBU 6 (6-9, 1-5 GSC)


GAME CHANGER:

The Falcons plated five runs in the third inning and held on for the win. 


INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Montevallo finished with an 11-5 advantage in hits. 
  • Dalton Pyzer finished 2-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs. 
  • Ben Brocato, Nick Stamper and Shahkai Matthews had the other hits for CBU. 
  • CBU had four batters reach safely via hit by pitch. 
  • The Bucs took advantage of six walks.
KEY PLAYS:

The Falcons took advantage of two walks and a pair of hit batters to take a 3-0 lead in the second. 

Montevallo added five more in the third to increase its lead to 8-0. 

2022 GSC Co-Player of the Year Sam Kuchinski had a two-run home run in the inning. 

The Bucs got on the scoreboard in the fifth, when Dalton Pyzer smacked a double down the left field line to score three runs. 

CBU took advantage of three walks and an error to score three runs in the sixth. 

The Bucs had the tying run at the plate in the seventh, but a strikeout ended the contest.  


NOTABLES:

  • The Bucs are tied for the GSC lead in walks (84) and hit by pitch (34).
