U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn and Representative Earl L. "Buddy" Carter have introduced the Undersea Cable Protection Act, aimed at enhancing national security and global connectivity by protecting the United States' submarine cable infrastructure.
The proposed legislation seeks to ensure diverse routing for national security purposes, streamline permitting processes, and facilitate the deployment and maintenance of submarine cables. It also aims to uphold existing local, state, and federal permitting regulations while safeguarding national marine sanctuaries.
Senator Blackburn emphasized the importance of undersea networks in global connectivity and the digital economy. She stated that the act would allow for the construction and preservation of undersea cables without unnecessary federal regulations.
Representative Carter highlighted recent events in the Baltic Sea as evidence of the vulnerability of submarine cables to attacks from hostile nations. He expressed pride in collaborating with Senator Blackburn on this legislation, which he believes will enhance safety and connectivity while improving government efficiency.
The bill has garnered support from several original co-sponsors: Representatives Neal Dunn, August Pfluger, Gus Bilirakis, Kat Cammack, and Randy Weber. It is also endorsed by industry groups such as the International Connectivity Coalition, INCOMPAS, Telecommunications Industry Association, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
