WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senators Marsha Blackburn and Richard Blumenthal have issued a joint statement ahead of the upcoming Senate Judiciary Committee hearing with Big Tech CEOs. Both senators, who are members of the committee, expressed their concerns regarding the actions of social media companies and the need for real and enforceable reforms to protect children online.

In their statement, Blackburn and Blumenthal highlighted the ongoing harm suffered by children as a result of their online activities. They criticized the empty promises made by Big Tech executives and emphasized the urgency of implementing measures that prioritize the safety of young people over profit.

"Big Tech executives have been making the same hollow promises for years as kids are suffering horrific harms online," the senators stated. They further added, "Without real and enforceable reforms, social media companies will only continue publicly pretending to care about young people’s safety while privately prioritizing profits."

Acknowledging the frustration expressed by young people, parents, and experts, Blackburn and Blumenthal are determined to address this issue and bring about meaningful change. They are actively working on the Kids Online Safety Act, a bill aimed at ensuring the safety of children in the digital realm.

"As urged by young people, parents, and experts who are fed up with this tired playbook, we are redoubling our efforts to pass the Kids Online Safety Act to make real change for kids online," the senators declared. They also emphasized their commitment to collaborating with stakeholders and colleagues to develop robust legislation that will swiftly become law.

The joint statement by Blackburn and Blumenthal highlights the growing concern over the impact of social media on children's well-being and the urgent need for effective regulations. As the Senate Judiciary Committee prepares for the hearing with Big Tech CEOs, these senators are determined to champion the cause of online safety for young people and ensure that social media companies are held accountable for their actions.
