U.S. Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) have joined forces with their colleagues to introduce the Safeguarding Charity Act. The aim of this bill is to protect the independence of the nation's tax-exempt organizations, such as private schools, churches, and non-profit charities.
The need for this legislation arises from recent rulings by federal judges that have placed federal restrictions on private institutions solely based on their tax-exempt status. This has raised concerns that these institutions could face punishment if they fail to comply with burdensome and politically polarized regulations.
Senator Blackburn expressed her concern over the weaponization of the judicial system under the Biden administration, which has resulted in overreaching and politically charged rulings by activist judges. She emphasized the importance of protecting constitutionally protected places of worship and other non-profit entities that continue to support charitable work in communities. Senator Blackburn stated, "This legislation would protect these organizations from undue federal regulations."
Senator Rubio echoed these sentiments, highlighting the crucial role played by civic organizations like churches, schools, and charities in our communities. He expressed worry over recent court decisions that could subject these organizations to burdensome federal regulations simply because they are tax-exempt. Senator Rubio stated, "My Safeguarding Charity Act would protect these organizations from the government's politicized battles so they can continue their vital work in our communities."
The Safeguarding Charity Act has garnered support from other senators as well. Senators Mike Braun (R-Ind.), J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), James Lankford (R-Okla.), and Mike Lee (R-Utah) have all joined as original cosponsors of the bill.
The introduction of the Safeguarding Charity Act aims to ensure that tax-exempt organizations are not unfairly targeted and burdened by federal regulations. By protecting these organizations from government overreach, the bill seeks to enable them to continue their invaluable charitable work in communities across the nation.
