WASHINGTON – In advance of Tuesday’s observance of America’s 247th birthday, Congressman Cohen (TN-9) released the following statement:

“Our founders signed the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia 247 years ago, beginning an experiment in liberty that rejected tyranny and injustice and in time became the United States of America. The model of freedom they created has become the envy of the world. On Tuesday, as we gather with friends, family and neighbors for barbecues and fireworks, we will celebrate our nation, the oldest independent democratic republic on earth.

“Our long history includes many moments in which we had to correct our direction as we strove to be a more perfect union. These days, with disinformation campaigns and dark money working to divide us, and with fundamental rights under assault, we must remain vigilant and protect the freedoms we have won and remember the lessons we have learned.

“On this 4th of July, we see the need for further course corrections to address reproductive freedom, voter suppression, economic inequality, systemic racism, gun violence, climate change, and other issues critical to our future as a nation. There is much to be done.

“I wish everyone a safe and happy Independence Day.”
