WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a strong supporter of President Biden’s plan to erase $10,000 in student loan debt, and up to $20,000 for recipients of Pell grants, today expressed his dismay at another Supreme Court ruling that will hurt millions of Americans.  Congressman Cohen held an online webinar last October with a senior U.S. Department of Education official to go over the application procedure.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“President Biden’s loan forgiveness program promised real debt relief for millions and the hope that, free of the burden, they could begin living, marrying, buying homes and cars that their debts prevented. The President called it giving them ‘breathing room.’ In striking down the program, the Supreme Court reversed all of that, and  is piling on just as so many recent graduates are trying to jumpstart their careers after the pandemic. I pledge to continue to work to lift this burden off these borrowers. As the President said this afternoon: the fight is not over.”
