WASHINGTON – Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm traveled to Riverview Elementary School earlier today to announce that it and its Middle School have been selected as one of 24 schools across the country to have major energy-savings renovations made under the Department’s Renew America’s Schools Program. While an exact grant amount has not yet been awarded, Memphis-Shelby County Schools has been chosen to negotiate its request for $9.5 million for improvements that would include lighting replacement, HVAC upgrades, boiler plant electrification, new exterior windows, and solar array. Only former Congressman Jim Cooper, who was gerrymandered out of his Nashville district, and I voted for it in the Tennessee Congressional delegation.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:
“The home of the ‘Mighty Vikings’ will soon be a showcase of what renewable energy progress and energy-savings look like. I am pleased that Riverview is in line to make major improvements in its physical plant and thank Secretary Granholm for coming to Memphis to make this major announcement. This kind of investment will transform not just the school but the entire learning environment for Riverview students.”
