WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today condemned the 6-3 majority opinion striking down affirmative action in college admissions and rolling back decades of legal precedent.

The ruling, which resolved two cases filed by Students for Fair Admissions Inc., one against Harvard College and the other against the University of North Carolina, will affect college admissions policies nationwide.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“America is not yet ‘a more perfect union.’ Centuries of discrimination still divide us. We know that education provides a ladder for social mobility, but the Supreme Court just kicked it away for many of those who still face the legacy of slavery and racial injustice. Affirmative action policies have been instrumental in bringing diversity to our most important institutions, and in so doing, expanding opportunity.  The Supreme Court decision today keeps ‘the good old boys club’ alive and the more perfect union on life support.”
