MEMPHIS, TN – On April 25, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) issued the following statement on the passing of Harry Belafonte:

"Harry Belafonte was a great American who exhibited his patriotism and his call to activism during the Civil Rights Movement and far beyond,” said Congressman Cohen. “He was one of Dr. King's strongest allies, and was a man of moral rectitude throughout his entire life. I was fortunate to get to know him when his sister, Shirley Cooks, served as my first Chief of Staff in the U.S. Congress. Harry came to Memphis along with Congressman John Conyers and actor Danny Glover to participate in one of my earliest town hall meetings at Rhodes College in 2008. Harry was beloved wherever he went, and his life was purposeful as an entertainer, but even more so as a humanitarian. He will be greatly missed."

Belafonte, a renowned musician and activist, passed away today at the age of 96. His legacy as a champion of civil rights and humanitarian causes, along with his music, will continue to inspire generations to come.

Congressman Cohen expresses his condolences to Belafonte's family and loved ones during this time.
