MEMPHIS, TN – On April 21, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced that the Memphis International Airport will receive an $11.65 million federal infrastructure grant award to support the reconstruction of existing taxiway, as well as for the installation of new taxiway lighting. The new federal resources are being awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Improvement Grant Program, and were made possible by the FY 2023 Consolidated Appropriations Act (H.R. 2617), which Rep. Cohen voted to pass on December 23, 2022.

“This is great news for the Memphis International Airport, and for all the local passengers, businesses, and workers who utilize it,” said Congressman Cohen. “Our international airport is responsible for helping the Memphis metropolitan area generate billions of dollars in revenue annually, and it facilitates all sorts of travel for millions of Americans every single year. Now, infrastructure funding through our 2023 federal spending package is going to help them shore up aging taxiways and become even more efficient—that means increased travel and economic activity, more output, and more jobs. The Memphis International Airport has undergone some exciting and truly generational transformations lately, and I know that Scott Brockman and his team have a list of other important priorities they’re ready to get started on. Whether it’s through the 2023 appropriations bill or through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act I voted to pass in 2021, federal resources are providing them the funding they need to gear up and keep going, and it’s great to see the wheels moving forward for them and for Memphis.”

This federal grant award will fund the second phase of the Taxiway A West reconstruction project, which involves reconstructing the remaining 1,472 feet of the existing 3,200-foot taxiway pavement that has reached the end of its useful life. Additionally, the project will install a new lighting system on Taxiway A West to enhance safe airfield operations during low visibility conditions.
