WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York responded to Tuesday’s announcement that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has named 16 members to a new Advisory Committee on Underrides Protection and published an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking side underride guards, both of which were provisions they advanced as part of the Stop Underrides Act in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. They made the following joint statement:
“We are encouraged that NHTSA is taking steps to stop preventable underride accidents, in which automobiles slide under truck trailers. We have been proud champions of the Stop Underrides Act, several provisions of which were included in the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. We are also pleased to see NHTSA moving forward with an advance notice of proposed rulemaking on side underride guards and seeking comment from the public on ways to mitigate underride motor vehicle accidents. While we cannot save the innocent lives lost to these crashes, we will never stop fighting for progress in preventing these terrible accidents.”
