Congressman Cohen Calls for Developing a More Diverse Aviation Workforce

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), the Ranking Member of the Aviation Subcommittee, today questioned expert witnesses at a hearing on Reauthorizing the Federal Aviation Administration entitled “Examining the Current and Future Challenges Facing the Aerospace Workforce.”

In his opening statement, Congressman Cohen called for additional outreach to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) as FedEx is doing to increase their students’ entry into the aviation industry. He noted that Black Americans constitute only 3.4 percent of professional pilots, 5.6 percent of Airport Management positions, and 9.5 percent of air traffic controllers.

Witnesses at today’s hearing were:

  • Ms. Faye Malarkey Black, President and Chief Executive Officer, Regional Airline Association;
  • Dr. Sharon B. DeVivo, President, Vaughn College;
  • Mr. Brad Thress, President and Chief Executive Officer, FlightSafety International;
  • Ms. Heather Krause, Director, Physical Infrastructure, U.S. Government Accountability Office;
  • Captain Jason Ambrosi, President, Air Line Pilots Association, International
