Black History Month Dr. Charles Champion | City of Memphis
Memphis celebrates #BlackHistoryMonth throughout the year, yet we would be remiss to not share the achievements of Black Memphians this month, starting with the late Dr. Charles Champion, who passed away Jan. 21 at age 92. A pharmacist by trade, Dr. Champion was a pioneer in the medical field and a beloved figure for several generations of Memphians.
After serving as an Army pharmacist in Germany, Dr. Champion worked at Gaston City Hospital, making history as the first African American to work as a pharmacist in a Memphis hospital. In 1981, he opened Champion's Pharmacy. His legacy lives on through his pharmacy, his wife, his two daughters who followed in his footsteps to become pharmacists, and his family and friends. #BlackPioneer #MemphisMakers #BlackHistoryMonth
