The Memphis women's tennis team had a tough weekend in the Golden Triangle as the Tigers dropped both of their matches against No. 14 Iowa State (4-0) and No. 68 Mississippi State (4-1).
On Saturday against the Cyclones (6-1), the Tigers earned a 6-2 victory at the No. 1 doubles with Aran Teixido Garcia and Emily Myer, but that was all they could pull out as Iowa State went on to claim the doubles point and swept its first three singles matchups to take the match, 4-0.
"We played a tough opponent on Saturday, but we have to give credit to Iowa State for playing solid tennis," Memphis head coach Hayden Perez said. "We have to keep our heads up and be ready for the challenges ahead of us."
On Sunday against the homestanding Bulldogs (7-1), Memphis came out of the gate strong in doubles. After dropping the first match on court three, Camila Soares and Monique Woog evened the match with a 6-3 victory on court two.
Teixido and Meyer then clinched the match's first point at the top position with a 7-6 (7-2) decision to put Memphis in front 1-0.
The Tigers used that momentum early in the singles and looked to be in control after winning the first set on courts 1-4. But the Bulldogs won in straight sets on courts five and six before battling back to win at the No. 2 and No. 4 positions in three sets to secure the 4-1 victory for Mississippi State.
