Former Memphis Head Coach Carrie Yerty Passes Away | The University of Memphis
Former Memphis Tiger volleyball head coach Carrie Yerty passed away Jan. 24 after a long battle with cancer.
Yerty was the longest tenured head coach in Memphis volleyball history, serving in the role from 1996 to 2007. During her 12 years at Memphis she became the all-time winningest coach in program history, collecting 233 wins. This included eight winning seasons and four consecutive from 2001-04.
"Our program is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of coach Carrie Yerty. Those who had the pleasure of knowing Carrie knew she was a fierce competitor both as a player and a coach but also someone who cared deeply for those she was around," said Tiger head coach Sean Burdette.
"Carrie had a major influence on the Memphis area community, not only during her successful 12-year run as the Tigers' head coach but also in her return to the Memphis area as the head coach of Briarcrest High School where she won numerous State Championships, including two with current University of Memphis setter, Loren Robertson. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Yerty family and all her former student-athletes and staff."
Other coaching accolades for Yerty include the best single-season winning percentage in 2003 (30-6, .833) and the first-ever appearance in the Conference USA Championship match. She coached the first All-American in program history and 2004 C-USA Setter of the Year, Heather Watts and 1999 C-USA Defensive Player of the Year, Annie Hamilton.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Carrie Yerty Courage and Discipleship Fund.
