The University of Memphis Offensive Surge Gives Tigers Win Over Redhawks

The Memphis Tiger women's basketball team picked up their second consecutive win in the Fieldhouse tonight after taking down the Redhawks of Miami (Ohio) 76-51.

Memphis (2-1) and Miami (1-2) traded baskets to open the game before the Tigers closed out the opening quarter on a 7-0 run that was capped with a three-pointer from Madison Griggs for the 17-11 lead.

Griggs would continue with her hot hand in the second quarter, scoring seven of the team's 16 points. Along with the Tiger offense, their defense would hold the Redhawks to just 29% shooting with blocks from Jada Wright and Emani Jefferson. Memphis would take the 33-24 lead into halftime.

The Tigers would push their lead out in the third quarter behind a nearly five-minute scoring drought from Miami. Griggs, Destyne Jackson and Jamirah Shutes would score off multiple trips down the floor to give Memphis a 15-point lead.

It was all Memphis in the fourth quarter with Jamirah Shutes leading the way with eight of her 17 points.

A 12-0 run from the Tigers would give them their largest lead of the night at 27 after back-to-back layups from Destiny Thomas and Tanyuel Welch. Miami would get two free throws in the final minute of the game from Sierra Morrow as Memphis took the 76-51 win.

Madison Griggs collected her third straight game of scoring 18 points while Jamirah Shutes recorded 17 points. Destyne Jackson picked up her first double-digit scoring game of the season with 10 points while Destiny Thomas grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

As a team, Memphis shot 44% from the field and 40% from long range. The Tiger defense forced the Redhawks into 18 turnovers and blocked six shots, three of which came from Jada Wright.
