Following a noteworthy 2021-22 season to kick-off the Katrina Merriweather Era, the Memphis Tiger women's basketball team has jumped to the top half of the American Athletic Conference where they are picked tied for 5th place while fifth-year senior Jamirah Shutes has found herself on the Preseason All-Conference Second Team.
Memphis, who finished 16-12 overall and 6-9 in AAC play a season ago, made tremendous strides in the first year with Merriweather at the helm; the Tigers quadrupled their win total from the 2020-21 season, recorded the program's first 15+ win season since the 2015-16 season and had the best start to a season (6-1) in nearly a decade. Memphis also saw a 91-point jump in the NET rankings from the previous season and recorded the program's 400th win inside Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
"We are looking forward to a competitive season. We appreciate the respect after bringing in 6 new players," said Merriweather. "Jamirah is poised to have her best year yet. The fun part is she's far more concerned with her team's success than her own."
Shutes, a native of Brownsville, Tenn., returns for her final year with Memphis. The 5-9 guard became the 27th Tiger in program history to score 1,000 points while leading the team with 11.6 points per game. Shutes was ranked as one of the top-10 free throw shooters in the AAC at 76.6% and had a career year with 120 rebounds. She also earned AAC Weekly Award honors on two occasions.
Memphis will kick-off their 2022-23 season in less than a month with an exhibition against Rust College on Tuesday, Nov. 1 before opening the season at home on Monday, Nov. 7 against Columbia. Season tickets are available now at GoTigersGo.com or by calling the ticket office at (901) 678-2331.
