The University of Memphis Tigers Split Matches Against Nicholls and CMU to Open Season

Memphis volleyball opened the 2022 season 1-1. Defeating Nicholls State 3-2 in the early match before falling to Central Michigan 2-3.

 Memphis 3, Nicholls 2

 Nichols won the first set 26-24 after grabbing a slim advantage early. Memphis rallied in the second, going on a 7-1 to go up 8-3 early. Behind Miaya Smith's five kills and two blocks Memphis finished the set on a 8-2 winning it 25-16.

 The third saw with 12 ties and eight lead changes until Nicholls went on a run to win the set 25-17 and go up 2-1 in the match.

 The fourth stay competitive until the Tigers went on a 13-5 run to close it out and tie up the match to force a fifth set.

 Memphis fell early 5-7 before going on another run (6-1) to take lead. The set went back-and-forth with Memphis finishing the set on a Jasmyn Tate kill to win 15-12 and the match 3-2.

 Notables

  • Miaya Smith led the team with 16 kills, including four in the second set, on a .375 hitting percentage and had our blocks.
  • Sophomore transfer and JUCO All-American Jasmyn Tate and freshman Chelsea George made their debut for the Tigers.
  • Tate and Tabytha Toelke both had double-doubles (Tate - 13k, 16d // Toelke 13k, 11d)
  • Loren Robertson handed out 42 assists to go along with five kills on a .385 hitting percentage and a team-high 17 digs.
  • Junior Bailey Houlihan had a  team-high 17 digs.
 

Memphis 2, CMU 3

 In their second match of the day, Memphis took the lead and relied on an early 10-2 run to win the first set 25-22. The carried the momentum into the second, never trailing and winning the set 25-22.

 Central Michigan came back, winning the final three sets (25-23,26-16,15-10).

  

Notables

  • Sophomore transfer and JUCO All-American Halle Everett made her Memphis debut in the fourth set and had an immediate kill.
  • Toelke led the Tigers with 16 kills, including eight in the second set and had a double-double with 10 digs.
  • Houlihan led the team in digs with 18
  • Senior Gigi Crescenzo had six kills, five blocks and 15 digs on the night.
