Today marks the 50th anniversary of the date Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 was signed into law, requiring every school receiving federal funding to provide equal opportunities for men and women in educational activities and programs, including athletic programs.
Five decades after the signing of this landmark civil rights legislation the success of Rhodes College's eleven women's athletic programs, which includes several conference championship teams, cannot be understated. The contributions of the women scholars and athletes who have lived, learned, and achieved on our campus has only deepened our exemplary legacy.
For a further look at how opportunities provided to student-athletes by Title IX have changed the lives of our Lynx, keep an eye out for the next issue of Rhodes Magazine!
