Steve Cohen, a U.S. Congressman representing Tennessee’s 9th district since 2007, recently took to social media to express his concerns and legislative actions regarding the current political climate. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1949, Cohen has a long history of public service, including two decades in the Tennessee Senate.

On May 3, 2025, Steve Cohen highlighted an attack on press freedom via his Twitter account. He stated: “The attack on a free press is happening right now.” In this tweet, he accused former President Donald Trump of defunding NPR and PBS for their critical coverage of his administration’s impacts. Cohen emphasized that World Press Freedom Day should be viewed as a call to action rather than just a celebration and announced his intention to introduce a resolution condemning these actions.

In another tweet posted on May 5, 2025, Cohen criticized plans for a taxpayer-funded birthday parade proposed by Trump. He wrote: “Trump wants a birthday parade with tanks, jets & 6,600 troops—and he wants YOU to pay for it.” Labeling the plan as wasteful spending and misuse of funds, Cohen introduced the HAPPY BIRTHDAY Budget Act to prevent such expenditures. He further criticized Trump’s priorities by contrasting them with potential cuts affecting children’s Christmas gifts.
