Steve Cohen, U.S. Congressman representing Tennessee’s 9th district since 2007, has recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing legislative actions and immigration enforcement in Memphis.
On November 16, 2025, Cohen shared a music video link with the post: “Jesse Winchester, Talk Memphis https://t.co/NDjbU6tvos via @YouTube”.
The following day, on November 17, 2025, he commented on congressional activity by stating: “House targets $500K payout clause for Republican senators https://t.co/IsDU0nM856 via @YouTube. this is the most egregious legislative action I’ve seen in Congress .The House and Senate both must act immediately to repeal it. It puts a blight on both chambers but particularly”.
On November 18, 2025, Cohen addressed federal immigration enforcement in his district: “I’m calling on the Trump admin to remove ICE from Memphis. They aren’t going after the “worst of the worst” — they’re sweeping up parents, grandparents, workers, even US citizens. Immigrants aren’t driving crime, and ICE isn’t helping. They’re tearing apart our community & https://t.co/3pTkflG4uH”.
Cohen’s remarks reflect ongoing concerns about both internal congressional policies and local impacts of national immigration strategies. He has served as a member of Congress since replacing Harold Ford Jr. in 2007 and previously held office in the Tennessee Senate from 1983 to 2003. Born in Memphis in 1949 and currently residing there at age 73, Cohen is an alumnus of Vanderbilt University (BA) and holds a JD from the University of Memphis.
