Steve Cohen, U.S. Congressman representing Tennessee’s 9th district since 2007, posted a series of comments on social media addressing topics ranging from higher education to immigration enforcement and presidential conduct.

On April 16, 2026, Cohen praised Vanderbilt University, his alma mater, writing, “Vanderbilt is a powerhouse in our nations educational roster. I was impressed with the students and the faculty who I met with and the programs that the government is helping fund with the outstanding Vanderbilt personnel contributions.” Cohen graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1971 before earning a law degree from the University of Memphis two years later.

Later that day, Cohen criticized the sitting president’s approach to leadership: “And our classless, retribution guided President continues to dig while he is in his hole” (April 16, 2026).

On April 17, 2026, Cohen commented on Todd Lyons’ departure from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), stating: ‘”The worst of the worst” was a lie. Todd Lyons was a key part of that lie. His ICE agents spent a year ripping apart families and killing Americans who protested it. Now he wants to join the private sector and spend more time with HIS family. A golden parachute won’t let him’

Cohen has represented Tennessee’s 9th District in Congress since replacing Harold Ford Jr. in 2007 and previously served in the Tennessee Senate for two decades. Born in Memphis in 1949, Cohen continues to reside there as he carries out his legislative duties.
