Steve Cohen, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Tennessee’s 9th district since 2007, has been vocal on various issues through his social media platform. On May 7, 2025, he addressed the impact of trade policies and proposed legislative actions.

On May 7, Cohen expressed concern over the effects of trade policies on small businesses. He stated that “Trump’s trade war is crushing small retailers, restaurants, breweries & more—and all the jobs they provide.” He criticized the ability of larger entities to adapt compared to smaller businesses on Main Street and called for substantial support for these enterprises.

Later that day, Cohen shared additional information regarding his stance by providing a link to a full letter on the subject. He tweeted “Full letter here: https://t.co/8dK3iado9F”, inviting readers to explore further details.

On May 8, Cohen highlighted concerns about proposed budget cuts by Republicans. He tweeted that “Republicans want to gut Medicaid and slash food aid by $1 TRILLION, hurting kids, seniors, the disabled, and working families.” Cohen challenged claims against these cuts and urged support for the Hands Off Medicaid and SNAP Act by signing a petition to force a vote.

Steve Cohen was born in Memphis in 1949 and has an extensive political career. Before joining Congress in 2007 after replacing Harold Ford Jr., he served in the Tennessee Senate from 1983 to 2003. A graduate of Vanderbilt University with a BA in 1971 and holding a JD from the University of Memphis earned in 1973, Cohen continues to reside in Memphis.
