Steve Cohen, a U.S. Congressman representing Tennessee’s 9th district since 2007, addressed several national and local issues in a series of posts on September 26, 2025.

In one post, Cohen criticized former President Donald Trump’s actions regarding the Department of Justice: “Trump forced out a respected Republican US Attorney who wouldn’t charge James Comey, and replaced him with a real estate lawyer with no criminal law experience—but who knew how to say, ‘Yes sir, Mr. Trump.’ This isn’t about justice. It’s about Trump using the DOJ to settle” (September 26, 2025).

Later that day, Cohen explained his opposition to recent GOP legislation: “This is why I voted against the GOP’s Big ‘Ugly’ Bill — and why Democrats won’t support a CR that locks in these health care cuts. Memphis is being hurt by this legislation as much if not more than any other district in America.” (September 26, 2025).

In another post addressing hiring practices at ICE, Cohen wrote: “He didn’t seem to be very well trained. I wonder what training they go through. New hires get up to a $50,000 signing “bonus”. help paying college loans, and enhanced retirement. How many people do you think Ice hired from local law-enforcement leaving local communities short” (September 26, 2025).

Cohen has represented Tennessee’s 9th District in Congress since succeeding Harold Ford Jr. in 2007 and previously served two decades in the Tennessee Senate from 1983 to 2003. Born in Memphis in 1949 and currently residing there at age 73, he holds degrees from Vanderbilt University and the University of Memphis.
