The Memphis Tigers softball team split a doubleheader against North Texas on April 17, opening their series with a shutout win before falling in the second game.
The games featured two of the American Conference’s lowest-ranked pitching staffs. The Tigers secured a 1-0 victory in the first matchup, marking their first shutout against a conference opponent since May 2021. In the second game, Memphis was unable to overcome an early deficit and lost to North Texas 4-2.
In game one, both starting pitchers began strong with multiple strikeouts in the opening inning. The game’s only run came when Cunningham delivered a looping single over shortstop, allowing Memphis to take the lead. Defensive plays by Cunningham and others helped pitcher Clark maintain her shutout through seven innings. This complete-game effort was Clark’s first career shutout and tied her career-high for strikeouts.
The second game saw North Texas score early runs, including two from Elizabeth Moffitt—a single and a solo home run—while Madison Conley added another RBI hit. Memphis narrowed the gap in the fifth inning with an RBI triple followed by aggressive baserunning that brought home another run. However, mistakes on base paths cost them additional opportunities as they were caught stealing multiple times.
Several statistical milestones were reached during this doubleheader: Memphis’ season total of sacrifice bunts now stands at 40 (tied for third-most nationally), while their 13 triples are tied for first in their conference and third-most in program history. The team’s defense has also turned 18 double plays this season—the eighth-best mark for Memphis—and recorded its sixth-most stolen bases ever at 61.
The series will conclude with a rubber match scheduled for Sunday at noon, broadcast on ESPN+. Single-game tickets remain available for purchase through official channels.
