The University of Memphis baseball team lost to Murray State by a score of 9-5 on April 28 at Johnny Reagan Field. The Tigers collected six hits and saw home runs from multiple players, but could not overcome two multi-run innings by the Racers.
The loss marks another setback for Memphis, which now holds a record of 16-27 overall and 8-10 in the American Conference. This result is significant as it comes late in the season, with only a few games remaining before postseason play.
Murray State built an early lead with three runs in both the second and fourth innings. Memphis responded with scoring plays throughout the game, including solo home runs and a two-RBI triple by Hernandez, who led the Tigers with three RBI on the day. Despite these efforts, Murray State continued to add to their lead and held off any comeback attempts over the final innings.
Memphis used seven pitchers during the contest, with starter (1-3) taking the loss after allowing three runs over two innings. The bullpen combined for six strikeouts across six innings of relief work.
Notable performances included Smith stealing two bases to remain perfect on steal attempts this season, Cox adding his ninth stolen base, and Pitts recording his first steal along with his first double of the year. Hernandez had his second home run in as many midweek games and tallied his first triple of the season while driving in three runs total. Center fielder went 2-for-4 at bat with his team-leading twelfth home run—placing him third in long balls within conference rankings—and also recorded his thirteenth multi-hit game.
Memphis will return home for its final homestand starting Friday against East Carolina at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
