The University of Memphis men’s tennis team lost a close match to Tulsa, 4-3, in the American Conference Championship quarterfinals on Apr. 17.

This result ends Memphis’ season with an overall record of 12-12 and eliminates them from the tournament. The Tigers had hoped to advance further and claim their first American Conference Championship next year.

Memphis started the match by losing the doubles point, despite earning a win on court one with a score of 6-2. In singles play, Tulsa won matches on courts one and three, building a 3-1 lead over Memphis.

The Tigers then mounted a comeback effort. They earned points with straight-set and three-set victories on courts six, two, and five. This tied the overall score at 3-3 and brought all attention to court four for the deciding match. In that final contest, Ruben Fernandez of Tulsa narrowly defeated his Memphis opponent in three sets—6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-5)—securing victory for Tulsa.

Memphis will look ahead to next season as they continue their pursuit of an American Conference title.
