FOIA Request to University of Memphis Regarding Chinese National Students on May 14, 2025.
As part of our commitment to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at Memphis Standard have submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the University of Memphis. This request seeks detailed information about Chinese National students currently enrolled at the university.
The specific requests made under the Tennessee Open Records Act include:
1. Documents or lists showing all current students who are Chinese Nationals, along with their respective departments of study. If this information is protected, we have requested a total count of these students and a breakdown by department.
2. Information on scholarships received by Chinese National students, including the amount and source of each scholarship.
3. A list of recipients for any scholarships affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council, unless this information is already included in the previous request.
4. Policies or procedures detailing how the university monitors students, including Chinese Nationals, to protect its Intellectual Property and other confidential information.
This request is part of our role in gathering and reporting news to hold public institutions accountable and provide transparency to the public. As members of The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy—a non-profit organization dedicated to investigating governmental agencies—we leverage Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws to inform the American electorate.
We believe that access to these public records is essential for fulfilling our professional responsibilities as media professionals. Consequently, we have requested a fee waiver due to our role in disseminating information to the public.
