In the wake of a terrorist attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day, U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn has raised concerns about the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The incident involved a suspect driving a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street, resulting in 14 deaths and multiple injuries. Among those injured were two police officers who engaged with the suspect.
Senator Blackburn addressed FBI Director Christopher Wray, questioning whether federal law enforcement can effectively prevent and respond to such attacks. She stated, “I write to express my deep concern regarding the terror attack that occurred in New Orleans on January 1.”
Blackburn criticized the FBI under Director Wray for allegedly prioritizing DEI over its primary mission of protecting citizens. She referenced a report by retired FBI agents indicating that the agency is hiring candidates based on DEI mandates rather than merit. “The law enforcement and intelligence capabilities of the FBI are degrading because the FBI is no longer hiring ‘the best and the brightest’ candidates,” she quoted from the report.
She further argued that this approach endangers public safety, citing events such as a ‘Diversity Agent Recruiting Event’ held by the New Orleans FBI Field Office months before the attack. Blackburn stated, “Your decision to prioritize politics…over your mission to protect the public has put Americans in harm’s way.”
The senator emphasized that Americans deserve transparency regarding how DEI initiatives might have compromised national security. She concluded by expressing hope for change with President-Elect Trump’s upcoming administration: “Americans now feel increasingly unsafe…Fortunately, the American people have spoken, and President Trump will soon bring law and order back to our nation.”
